A Very Grateful New Years Eve
A Very Grateful New Years Eve
Glorious weather here on the coast.
Went to a noon AA meeting.
There was even a BBQ outside after.
While enjoying a burger, my cell rang,
It was paramedics.
My elderly mother was sick and had fallen down and cracked her head.
She had laid on the floor unable to move for 2 hours.
She finally managed to grab a cushion and used it to drag herself to the phone and called 911
The paramed's had to kick in the door to get at her.
They told me my mom was being taken to hospital but her apt was unsecured with the door kicked in. The police were there for the meantime but they needed me to take care of things ASAP
I said a little prayer as I hopped in my car and sped to the hospital. Mom was in emergency ward puking up black stuff like crazy. She was being taken care of though and certainly in the right place for care.
So off I went to her place.
The police were still there.
I managed to get through to a locksmith still working on New years eve. He could come in an hour.
Cops left.
Got a friend to come and house sit the apt till the locksmith could come. Back to hospital I go.
Mom is pretty sick still, doesn't look so good at all.
Locksmith calls me.
Back to her apt I go.
Door gets fixed. Secured. Good as new.
I pay the guy and hightail it back to hospital.
Mom is pretty sick. No broken bones though thank goodness.
I stay at the hospital till 8 pm then go home. She's stabilized somewhat.
10:30 pm at home my cell rings and its the emerg nurse.
She needs me to bring them some of my Moms meds that they don't have at the hospital.
Off I go back to her apartment...dig around the place and find the stuff they needed. Take it to the hospital. Sit with my mom for a while.
Shortly before midnight I came home.
I'm grateful my Mom is still alive.
and
I'm so grateful to have been sober through this.
If I was still drinking, I would have been no use to anyone and mired in incredible guilt about it.
I'll be back up to the hospital first thing in the morning, but I will be saying my prayers tonight.
Thank God I'm sober today.

Amazing story....Glad your day started with a meeting and not in a bar....Cause you are right...You couldn't have pulled that off drinking...No way. You did the next right thing and you didn't pick up....Nice job. Here's to a great 2012 for you and your mom!
Sorry about your mom, Hooped, and I wish her a speedy recovery. But thank God for your sobriety and ability to handle the situation very adeptly. What an affirming moment to be able to be there for her in her time of need. God bless.
