A very successful Alcoholic
I get really angry at the myth of the addictive artist. Yes creatives seem to be at higher risk for becoming addicts and they can be successful in their chosen callings but does that mean they wouldn't have been better without the booze?
I was a successful alcoholic right up to the point where I wasn't anymore. I'm still getting my life back on track 16 months in. Yes my life is wonderful today, but how much more wonderful would it have been had I gotten sober earlier?

Guess it all depends on how each of us defines success.
being well known? our town drunk was known in two states, three counties, and four townships.
having a special talent? my mom was a great cook, but died due to alcoholism.
having money? bernie madoff-not successful.
being truly at peace with yourself? rich, poor, or untalented- peace is priceless.
