Question SR Roots

I saw some random, long-ago posts about how SR was born and how it has evolved.

Rather than a "go to such-and-such forums" reply, may I request that a cohesive history be posted to the Newcomer's Forum about SR's roots?

Don't mean to speak for all newcomers but I'd be interested. Thanks.

Here's a link. Some of us that, have been on here for several years knew Jon the guy that started Sober Recovery. I often wonder if, Jon knew the site would have this big of impact.

We used to call SR "The House that Jon Built".

I don't know if Jon knew the impact that SR would have. But, he and a handful of members in the beginning, made it a labor of love. And, it still is!

I love this quote from Jon:

"SoberRecovery.com really is a living, breathing community...you can watch as new people enter the site, in pain because of their addiction or an addicted loved one, and are greeted and surrounded by others who give of themselves. Its amazing. Goose-bump amazing.

Thank you and God bless you, Jon ~

Jon was pretty humble guy. I was able to visit with him a few times when I first joined. He was always helpful, along with everyone else. I think he is still alive and doing well, I should check

I recall chatting with a lady in Alberta Canada about what a God send the site was to her. It was winter and nasty out. She lived 40 miles from town and couldn't make a meeting.

The site brings so many people that have or are going through the same thing in life. How else can you get this kind of feedback from across the globe but on here

This is great - I'd always wondered about the origin. Never really knew much about the history of this place that helped save my life.

Written some years ago for an SR anniversary -- not by me, but another member who used to post here:

This is the house that Jon built.
This is the addict
who entered the house that Jon built.
This is the Codie
that hated the addict
who found some help in the house that Jon built.
This is the disease
that messed with the addict
that was defeated
when the addict and the codie entered the house that Jon built.
This is the child
that worried the parents
who found some recovery
when he entered
the house that Jon built.
This is the Codie
with the crumpled life
who became a better wife
that worked the steps
which killed the worry
and improved the life
of the Codie who entered the house that Jon built
This is the addict all forlorn
Who suddenly found a life re-born
who tossed the denial
that worried the Codie
which improved their bond
and made them fond
of finding the house that Jon built.
This is the soul all tattered and torn
that found SR one sunny morn
that no longer feels so tired and worn
that tossed the denial
that worried the Codie
which shed some light
that defeated the sickness
as he entered the house that Jon built.

These are the lives no longer torn
who find themselves a bit re-born
and no longer feel so very forlorn
because of the house that Jon built.

Peace & Love,
Sugah

On the 10th aniversary of this site I did a little detective work because I always wondered what Jon was up to now. I too was here when he was still an active presence on the site, it was only a couple years old when I joined. He didn't post a whole lot, but when he did it was always supportive and wise. He's still active in the Recovery community and helping others, which is what I would expect. I'm pretty sure when he started the site he had no idea it would develop as it has, it was just a place where addicts and alcoholics could get information about where to go get help, kinda a clearing house for that information. There was really not anything else like it at the time. Of course it still provides that service and the forums have evolved to be a huge part of the site. Like everyone else, I'm thankful Jon had the idea and the knowledge to put the site together. Take care.

Stay sober and pass it on is what Jon would want

I signed in here years back had to resign in for some reason. Struck up a conversation with Jon not knowing Jon had started the site. We used to talked about baseball and his love for music etc.

I was on a site called Sober City until, it went and died. Found this site by googling for inspirational stories. Great way to be around people in recovery 24/7

Already happily 3 years AA sober....I came on line in '92.
I was working long weirdo hours
wanted to expand my program committment.

My first cyber home site changed direction ..I started
searching for others I got very involved with several
before I settled into SR in '02.

SR has been a vital enhancement to my life in recovery.
Why? Because ........
