I picked a good time to get sober...
A couple months ago we learned that my aunt's husband of some fifty years has lung cancer and has maybe a year to live with treatment.
My mother is very close to her only sister as they are very close in age.
My mom has been very worried about her sister.
She had four brothers of which two are deceased.
Late last night she learned that Donald, one of the two remaining brothers has also just been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Needless to say she is very worried.
When she told me this morning she said, "At least thank God I don't have to worry about you anymore."
Which is true and for which I am also quite grateful.
At least now I will be sober to drive her back and forth to Alabama and won't have to sneak drinks to keep from going into withdrawal.
Which I have actually done and which sucks to put it mildly.
We seem to keep getting bad news, but at least I am sober and can be there to perform my responsibilities and not add to my mom's worries.

I did that too, B27 - all the time. Amazing that we actually thought we were making ourselves feel better. I can't believe I kept sucking it down, never thinking where it might end. I'm so glad you are living in the real world now and can be there for your family.
