how has being part of a community online contributed to your recovery?
It helped me two years ago by providing information about alcoholism I never knew. Despite knowing I was an alcoholic, I actually didn't really know anything about it: (whether you want to call it a disease or an addiction).
A couple of phrases really struck me:
"Recovery is a journey, not an event."
I always thought it was an event. I thought: one day I would just quit, and essentially remain the same person. SR has shown me that recovery is a process of personal change and development. I am not the same person I was when I quit drinking.

SR also helped motivate me to try and quit two years ago. I did it without a program.
When I went back to drinking, some of the simple suggestions here, such as:
"Do you have a program?"....really helped me to finally take those first steps:
into the doctors office, into my first AA meeting, into my first meeting with my therapist....
I learn a lot from this forum everytime I visit.
It also has a very different format than AA meetings. In meetings it is not usually encouraged to respond directly to a share.
Here, people do respond directly. I think that is an added aspect of SR that I find important.
Welcome to SR!

Littlefish, that is a fine post, I will practise the journey rather than the event, as I was always very unrealistic in my expectations when it came to quitting.
