What are(or were) your excuses to drink
Hi,
For those of you that are having a hard time staying sober because of stessful situations,
I'l tell you mine.
1) I don't have a job....I need one or else I'll lose my condo.
2) I don't have friends....no social life.
3) My son has alcohol problems.
4) My boyfriend is an alcoholic.
5) My youngest daughter is trying to finish college but has encountered many financial hardships(and I can't help her).
6) In reference to number 1, could you imagine a drunk like me trying to fill out a job application or going to an interview???? I'm sure I'll screw up.
7) Of course, my past constantly rears its ugly head.
8) My mother is old and I don't know how I will handle the situation when she starts getting sick.....etc. Or when she dies.
9) I'm also addicted to tranquilizers.
P.S. If I come up with anything else, I'll add it to the list.
Sorry for such a negative post.

My reasons I used for drinking before I decided to sober up...
Angry (at myself or others)
Sad (wanted to be numb)
Felt unloved/unwanted
Thought I had nothing left to lose
The "everyone else is doing it so it must be okay" cliche
Didn't know how to say no or use self control even when I wanted to
Ah it's just a short list for now. May not be a negative thread, it got me to thinking to what "caused" me to drink so I can be honest with myself and learn how to handle those situations without alcohol.

I'm anxious and I want to calm down.
I'm excited and I want to keep feeling that way.
I'm bored and I want to zone out.
I've worked hard today and I deserve it.
Basically: I (fill in the blank) and I used it as justification to drink.

My friends at the bar need me to come and amuse them.
The waitresses need me there to tip them.
The bar needs my business to be successful.
I need to support the economy.
I can't believe how selfless I was when I was drinking.
Now all those people are on their own. I feel guilty about that but not enough to drink.

Haha, some of you guys crack me up. I didn't need an excuse, by dinner time every night I had convinced myself that I loved drinking. Of course, the next morning I always promised myself I'd take a night off. . .
Man that sucks, I didn't have a reason I used to but after a while I just drank.
ok if I had to list reasons they would be.
1. It was Monday
2. it was Tuesday
3. it was Wednesday
4. it was Thursday
5. it was Friday
6. it was Saturday
7. it was Sunday
8 it was Monday again
This is it, I never needed a reason to drink, I would just drink and drink and drink.
In fact I just started to go to bed. before I would pass out.

I drank to retrieve some of the childhood I
lost due to physical and verbal abuse.
I drank to feel good. To look good. For
confidence. For self-pity. For lieing,
stealing, anger, resentments, hatred,
revenge, men, sex, escape, happy, sad,
holidays, occasions, weather. You name
it I drank over it, because of it.
Thank God I dont have to live like
that anymore.
Freedom from the bondage of the
drink.
Thanks for letting me share.

IMO the issues above should be treated more seriously than just excuses. I really like the prayer at the end of aa meetings in addressing life's problems
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.
