Jowinbo, I'm a relative newbie at being sober, only 8 days.
That's the best I've done in the last twenty years, when I laid off for 4 months.
It's a freakin' monster we're dealing with.
Just make it through today.
That's all.
Just today.
I'm a newbie 8 day sober man, but have spent the last 35 years drinking professionally.
Very professionally!
I'm not drinking today.
Just today.
You can do it too.
You can win.
Take a deep breath.....
Tell that monster to get lost, go away, beat him down.
Just for today.
If I can do it, you can do it.
Kill the monster.
Just for today.

It does get easier as time goes by so as Richard says do it one day at a time. If it is hard then come here and post. For me the first week was indeed the hardest and the more time that passes the more confidence you will gain.
The biggest fight is now and you can win it. Good luck.

Cravings can be really intense in the beginning, but they don't last long. Do anything you can to distract yourself. Brush your teeth, eat, go to bed, read a book, take a bath, go for a walk, phone a friend, pray, meditate, punch a pillow.
Just don't drink.
It gets easier.

For me....early sobriety was very difficult and confusing.
I joined AA and the understanding was immensley helpful.
Keep in focus...Yes! you too can find a better future...

there's probably a few different reasons.
1 is because it's an outright habit. and habits are hard to break.
2 is because, physically, your body wants it
3 is because when we get uncomfortable or bored we want to drink/drug. we don't want to feel these so we cover them up with booze or drugs.

Hi Jowinbo- I am on day 7 today and am finding the urges lessening somewhat. What I have found helpful is to completely change my normal routine. Last week I had to get in my car and just drive after work as I associate being home after work with drinking. I also bought some jig-saw puzzles that I am working on while watching TV. Normally I would be holding a glass of wine. I have never done puzzles before in my life and I find doing something new (albeit somewhat silly) is helpful.
I also keep telling myself I don't want to drink. If I wanted to, I would be... so really WE don't want to- it is that dang imp that wants the DOC, not us.
good luck! I will be thinking of you!

I hope today is going better for you!
We are both on the same sobriety date. I can fully understand. I was really having a tough time Friday night. And I thought about it a couple times tonight when it seemed as if everyone else was drinking there tonight but me.
But now I am glad I didn't, and I will be able to get up early & feel good!
Hang in there, new week tomorrow! We made it through another weekend of being sober!

whew...i'm exhausted from all the stinking thinking that occured over the course of maybe 2 little hours of my day. it's so nice to go through the uncomfortableness and make it out on the other side--where there is peace and gratitude and inclusion and connectivity
