First time poster newly sober
Hello to everybody, today is my 4th day free from drinking. Prior to this I drank 10-15 beers most days, this has been going on for the last couple years give or take a few months. I used to use marijuana with beer which really cut down on the beer; however, when I quit smoking marijuana regularly ironically a few years ago i started drinking more beer. At any rate I want sobriety for myself and to be there for my wife and kids who really deserve me to be 100%.

The first day I woke up like I was hungover, other than a headache and some grogginess not too bad, maybe a feeling of vulnerability. Since then each day is better than the one before I can really feel my emotions coming back. After reading others posts I feel pretty fortunate. I just have some anxiety about a future of not drinking. To me not drinking today is easier than accepting that I can't drink ever again.

Its something that has needed to be done for a long time, and I think I finally really know I have a problem. My wife showed me an illustration of a bell curve with the stages of alcoholism listed on it and asked me where I thought I was. We had had many discussions regarding my drinking in the past, and I had tried to quit a few times. But what starts out as a weekend treat always ends up being an everyday thing for me, so at that moment I told her I am done drinking. So here I am 4 days into it. Thanks for the greetings from all of you!

Good luck jackstraw, and welcome to SR!
There's lots of advice and people in the same boat as you here, so you're in thee right spot. I'd say look around and ask any questions you might have as to keeping away from the booze - all the best, and welcome again!

You guys all seem very nice and supportive, this is kind of weird for me to have people who have no idea who I am being so nice and helpful, you guys can really make a person feel good. Thanks.

we have all been there Todd. that was me too, just a short time ago. My husband is a very patient man for which I am very grateful to. Have you tried a meeting? I did and I really like the support. there are a lot of older guys there w/ tons of wisdom. My husband actually likes me to attend! however it does require going out there and trying one..... Sheila
Hi Todd and welcome to SR.
I found for the first couple of weeks when i woke up i didn't feel too great, but it wears off. Also i tried to cut back, and drink weekends- no chance. It had to be all or nothing, best wishes.

Welcome to SR Todd, congrats on the 4 days, just take it one day at a time, be willing to do what ever it takes to stay sober.
For me and a lot of others simply not drinking tended to lead to a relapse (I had 10 years worth!), I found that I had to do more then just not drink, I had to get into a program of recovery and change who I was in order to stay stopped.
