Going to my first meeting and other good news

I'm going to my first AA meeting tonight. I'm kinda nervous, and kind of excited too! I've always been a sociable sort (I was a touring pro musician for many years), and I've only been out of the house on a very limited basis since going sober 25 days ago. Right now I miss the bar atmosphere more than the actual drink itself. So I'm hoping that I'll meet some good folks, down some caffeine, and begin a new phase in my life. Wish me luck!!!

Had a good (yet funny/disturbing) thing happen this morning. On the health front, I got the fabulous news that my LFT's, kidneys, muscle enzymes, etc, are all in the normal range. So my health fears aren't crippling me now. But when I told a close family member and another friend, they both reacted the same way: "See? You aren't an alcoholic after all!" For a brief second I almost believed "Bob" when he said "So you see, as long as you just want to relax with glass of wine or two now and then you'll be fine". I mean, it sounded reasonable, and sure it was what I wanted to believe. But then my saner voice yelled out "no, no, NO!!!!" There is NO "one or two" for me. And I can't pretend otherwise, much as I'd like to.

Anyway, there's my big news for today. Now that I'm feeling relieved, I'm off to rearrange the living room furniture, LOL

I love hanging around with drunks, I just hang with sober ones now.

There is most certainly a spiritual connection.

That's great that your're going to a meeting and with a great attitude.

And congratulations on realizing there is no "one or two" - I remember you were worried that you might think that when your LFT's came back to normal.

Let us know how the meeting goes.

Hugs and prayers!

I've had family members tell me the very same thing. Denial is pretty powerful! I'm glad you didn't buy into it.
I hope you enjoy the meeting. I absolutely love AA, and the alcoholics I have come to know and love.
Let us know how it goes!

wylielass,

I am saddened when folks write, "I am an alcoholic, but AA isn't for me." It seems far more often than not these are people who have either never been to an AA meeting, or went once and then decided that AA didn't work.

I hated, absolutely hated AA the for the first 30 days (30+) meetings but I was desperate enough for a solution that I kept going until I began to understand AA, not until AA began to understand me. They understood me even BEFORE I walked into my first meeting! That was 8 years ago this coming Monday.

Cathy31 hit it right on the head, AA is great entertainment. A room full of people with my problem who have found a solution to my problem. I have never been kept in a meeting against my will, but I was kept in total despair by alcohol addiction against my will!

Welcome aboard, enjoy the trip.

If for any reason that meeting doesn't do it for you, try another one. They are all different.
