How imortant is outpatient care?

When I left rehab on 8/26 they set up an appt. for outpatient therapy. It is today at 10 am. The thing is I'm not sure I need it. I've been going to AA meetings every day and I got so much out of rehab that I feel that going to outpatient may be somewhat redundant. I know what I need to do and I am doing it. As it is, my time is stretched so thin. Do I really need to go to outpatient therapy, too?

I can't offer any advice here, Vodkaddict. I didn't do rehab and I'm not an AA person. What I do know is this - you need to work on your recovery every single day. Do something to help yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. Put your recovery as your main priority. I'm glad you're doing well!

For me right now..I did a whole 5 days inpatient in March..Yea big deal...was suppose to go to IOP..Intensive outpatient..Never did go. Didnt think I needed it. HA!! 60 days later I am laying in a hospital with 60 staples down my torso because I tried to kill myself.
Lets see..Went another 60 days clean and relapsed...Went to a mental healthdrug treatment facility where I actually stayed the whole time. Which I just got out of last week. I go to IOP the 17th. I cant get there fast enough.
In my opinion it is very important.
I say when you feel too comfortable is when your in trouble.
But that is just me.
And that is coming from someone who has been fighting the program like crazy.
Good Luck and I hope you follow up.

thats a tough one -- there is no blanket answer. One thing to consider...if you are truly confident that you "know what you need to do", would you be asking for input? Have you got anything to lose if you go to the intake appt at least..ask any questions you have, express concerns, etc, allowing you to make a more informed decision? For many it is a CRUCIAL piece...for many, it is not. I encourage you to follow the suggestions of the professionals for now as it is still very early. There is much to learn about building a foundation for recovery - no one walks out of an inpatient rehab armed with all the info...You may find it to be very helpful. If not -- you are always the boss of you and could shift gears at any time. That said, I am here to support you in recovery - regardless of your decision and I am sending you positive thoughts and prayers.

You may find it redundant... then again you may learn something new to add to your recovery tool kit. I don't think going would hurt anything VA. Why not give it a try? You'll likely meet some new friends to add to your sober circle as well.

It couldn't hurt to give it a try...this isn't a life sentence. If, after a few sessions, you don't feel it's benefitting you, be honest with the counsellor and just put all your recovery efforts into meetings. But, above all, do not abandon your regular AA program! You can always return to outpatient care in the future.

Family members or employers are always better than a judge.lol

here gose....YOU HAVE TO WANT IT !!!

notice i didn't use the word need...lol
mmm..if it worst , maybe you might get arrested or whatever.
Your going to want OP really, really bad.lol

I don't know, i was involved in an accident and had to
stay in the hospital for over a month.
The doc released me but told me I needed a weekly check up there after.
Makesense for stuff like that becuase it was life and death.

Recoverying from drugs and alcohol is life and death the last time I check.

I've been in both inpatient and outpatient and they both helped me. There was some stuff in each that I didn't get in the other. I am grateful for it because that means more tools in my toolbelt. I'd say it is to your advantage to go to outpatient also but it is up to you.

Give it a try and if you don't feel you are getting anything out of it, you can always leave.

Go to the initial meeting and then make a decision.

Right now, you have no facts with wich to decide either way.

It can't hurt, and it may do you good.

Thanks all!

Well, I went to my appt. BUT I had the wrong time! DUH! So, I rescheduled for 9/24 bright and early in the morning and this time I have it written in a safe place.

They were very nice there and so I will definitely give it a try.

I found intensive outpatient recovery critical to my recovery. Of course that is just me. I learned quite alot from everyone else's recovery stories, especially those that had relapsed. I became determined this would not be my outcome and really listened to what everyone had to say. The sessions were 3x/week for 3 hrs. over a period of several months and had 1 on 1 sessions w/my counselor for 8 months.

It's been now over 3 years and I never take my sobriety for granted.
