One Day Sober
One Day Sober
Hello yesterday and so far today is my first time sober in a long time. I am trying to find family support meetings in my area. Silverlake Los Angeles. My husband who is not an drinker would like to attend some alanon meeting with me before I jump into AA. Any advise.
Also after drinking a bottle or more of wine a night for the last 3 years. Will I have anyside effects?

Hi Mems,
Welcome to our recovery community. Have you talked to your doctor? It would be a good idea, as it can be dangerous to detox on your own.
I think it's wonderful that your husband is willing to attend Al-Anon.
I attend AA, and on occasion, Al-Anon. Both have been very helpful.
Please continue to post and help us get to know you better. There IS hope.

Hi and Welcome,
It's always a good idea to talk to your dr before you stop drinking because it can possibly be dangerous.
I'm glad you found us and you will find lots of support and information here.
Maybe your husband would like to register also, and check out the Friends and Families forums that we have on this board. He'll find good support there.

Welcome, glad you're here! Every one of us has had our first day, many have had more than one. The important part is admitting that we're powerless and that we need help.
Here's the AA website for meetings in your area:

One thought- Your husband might appreciate the support of Al-Anon by himself, and attend some open AA meetings with you later on. You'll figure out what works best for you, but that seems to work well for my girlfriend and I.
Here's some info on what to expect- http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...at-expect.html

If I were you I'd jump straight into AA, and also check out al-anon - only thing is I know from experience it's so easy to put off recovery, and i reckon if you DO jump in it's the best thing for you! good luck! GREAT STEP!

Gazillions of AA meetings in SoCal. In case you've never been to one, here is a good guide of what to expect:

To answer your question, yes there will be side effects. The link Astro posted will give you a good idea what to expect but it's not the exact same for everyone. In the long run you'll be much better off sober but the withdrawal can be pretty traumatic which is why some are telling you to see your doctor. Your body and mind will take some time to learn to function without alcohol and if it gets bad your doc may be able to give you something to ease the transition a little.
