Picking a sponsor?
for me, i always wanted to find someone that i felt like i could relate to, whose story was somewhat similar to mine. someone who i felt a "kinship" with, someone with qualities i wanted, who had that serenity and contentment about them. someone who spoke wisely and didn't judge. and, of course, had a lot of years of sobriety and wisdom under their belt, with not too many sponsees.
that's just what i look for, anyway. hope it helps

I needed someone who wouldn't 'buy into' my ... uh ... stuff.
Someone who'd tell it like it is, and leave it there. I didn't need a mama, I needed someone who really knew the Program, and could hand out the info I needed.
Turned out to be one of the three most 'feared' women in the group!
LOL !
And she's perfect for me.
best wishes!

Thanks for the insight all. I went through the steps with a member of AA but he was not my sponsor. When I find a sponsor, I have no issues revisiting steps. I really wanted to know what qualities, sobreity time, personality type etc. that some of you provided in picking a sponsor.

I strongly suggest you get to a meeting
and look for
"Questions and Answers on Sponsorship"
It's usually on the free literature rack.
Think of a sponsor as a mentor for Step work.
Obviously ... you need one who has finished his own.
Also..check out

BTW...Step 5 can be done with others
not only a sponsor.
When 5 was written there were no sponsors n AA.
My dear AA friend
... Father Bill S.
was leaving for a 7 year stint in Kenya.
I did mine with Bill
as did several others in our home group.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
