So true. Is something I stop doing with my first drink.
And is something that I'm learning now how to do.

I'm here happy to say that I want another 24 hrs more.

Perceptions

In early recovery we can sometimes be a bit sensitive.
We can easily misinterpret what people say to us or say in our
presence.

If we are feeling upset about something someone said to us, it’s
important that we consider why it was said to us in the first place.

We need to avoid jumping to conclusions, if at all
possible!

I used to react instead of respond all the time in the past , I was so
hasty and then I would make stupid decisions.

Again It's important to take a few minutes to really think about
why a person felt compelled to talk to us. It can can help us see
the situation from a whole new angle.

Sometimes we think we know what someone is saying or think
someone else has a deep seeded motive for telling us something
when in reality it has nothing to do with us, they are just making a
statement.

Perhaps they had a perfectly logical reason for telling us something
and we take it personally.

Maybe because it strikes a chord within us and provokes a bad
feeling, but that is not their problem.

We are responsible for our own feelings.

Then the next thing we do is react and run away, but many times
our perception is way off base. That's just early recovery. I did
the same thing. I was sooo sensitive.

But it was my own EGO. Thinking that people are really thinking
that deeply about me. A little bit of paranoia too.

Again, we are responsible for our own feelings and no one can make
us feel anything. It is how we perceive something and often those
perceptions are wrong.

When we react versus respond we are acting out in old behaviors.

Recovery is about learning to grow up mentally, emotionally and
spiritually and learning how to respond properly.

It's learning that we are not the center of the Universe.

And what we think is someone's agenda could be far from the truth.

It has been a hard lesson I have had to learn this last year. But when
I realized that other people are busy enough managing their own lives
and are not thinking about me 24/7. It was quite freeing.

This one's for you grtrgrandpa but I love it too!

Gotta love Tony Bennett!
