Triggers
Triggers are threats to anyone’s sobriety; they are whatever makes you think about and/or
crave alcohol/drugs. Triggers can lead to a relapse if you’re not careful and paying attention.
I am happy to say that mine are pretty identifiable and it has gotten a bit easier. In early recovery
my triggers were much more frequent and difficult to deal with, as almost anything posed a threat,
things like:
A beer commercial
A TV program or chair we sat in drinking
Glass tables (on which we did drugs)
An old song
A sunny day
A rainy day
Being overly thirsty
Being Hungry
Being angry
Being Lonely
Being Tired
Gettin off work
Fridays
Driving by the bar
Old hangouts
Feeling happy
Feeling sad
Watching football
Restaurants with bars
Using wine glasses
Feeling bored
Holidays
Stress
The beach
Cookouts
You name it.
The early days in recovery are of course the hardest because though we have given up the
booze and drugs, we haven’t had the time to replace it with healthy tools and habits. So we
don't know what to do with all the time we spent drinking/drugging.
We have to learn to approach life in new ways with a sober/clean mind and it takes a shift in
our perspective on just about everything, which takes a lot of time, energy and persistence.
Of course we can't avoid the weather or commercials on TV, but there certainly are obvious things
we should avoid early on like places that serve alcohol, hanging out with old friends who used
and anything that was strongly related to our using.
Just be aware in the early days that there will be triggers. Try to take note of them and avoid
them at all costs in the first few months of your recovery. It will make your life a whole lot easier.
And really let's try not to put ourselves in the middle of drinking situations in our first weeks to months.
There's a saying that if you keep going into the barbershop one day you will get a haircut.
Same thing with going to bars or old hangouts associated with drinking or using. We may not think
it is a problem but I believe subconsciously it is doing a number on our brain. And eventually we
will pick up.
The bars will still be there 6 months from now, let's give ourselves a chance to get a firm foundation
in recovery. I have a feeling by then you will wonder why it is you found those places so appealing in
the first place.
Now Who's In?
