Post lithium

Can anyone give me a general idea of the side effects of lithium? My doctor wants me to be on it, but I'm not sure.

I had information concerning Uses, Instructions, Side Effects, and Warnings for MANY depression-related pharmaceuticals on HelpDepression.com awhile back, but got a nasty phone call one day telling me that I either had to take it down or pay $50,000 PER YEAR to keep it. Regardless, here's the info on Lithium.

Common Symptoms
- Diarrhea
- Dry mouth or thirst
- Nausea or vomiting
- Tremor
- Drowsiness
- Muscle weakness

Less Common to Rare Symptoms
- Rash
- Weakness or fatigue
- Weight gain

Life-threatening Symptoms
- None expected

Possible Overdose Symptoms
Moderate overdose:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea

Large overdose:
- Coma
- Vomiting
- Stupor (impaired state of consciousness marked by a diminished reaction to external stimuli)
- Convulsions
- Muscle weakness

What to Do in Case of Overdose
- Dial 911 for emergency help or call your local poison control center.

Hope this helps.

I was on it for a while and tolerated it pretty well. Your doctor will do blood work to make sure you are at a therapeutic level. Too much Lithium can result in death, although it's quite noticeable when the dosage increases above the therapeutic level. (My lithium level crept above the therapeutic level, but this is really unusual. As I said, there are plenty of symptoms that start occurring if the dosage gets too high. You'll notice it, should it happen).

Thank you! That's funny and I'm embarrassed.

No need to be embarrassed. Still a relevant topic

I just didn’t want you to be waiting for a reply

Old is still good.

So, this is an old thread ?
Well, here's an old guy's experience:
I have been taking Lithium Carbonate for 44 years.
The side effects are far outweighed by the benefits for this manic-depressive (now bipolar) alcoholic.
The important side effects, for me, diminished after a month or two.
FYI: Wikipedia has an informative, if perhaps overly-technical, article on the use of the lithium ion.
Mind how you go.
