Alcohol withdrawal and triggering psychosis in bipolar disorder

Hi - I'm recently sober and have been diagnosed with bipolar. I'm on meds which normally keep me steady state. However I fear I'm experiencing a few symptoms that are similar to when I used to experience psychosis. Has anyone heard of this? I've a dr appointment booked for tomorrow.

I don't have any experience with bipolar or the meds, I'm glad to hear you're seeing a specialist and hope that you continue to come here on your journey in sobriety. Please post in the Newcomer and Alcoholism forums, you'll typically get many more responses. Welcome to SR!

Not precisely. But I was using cannabis to cope for awhile (I’m a few weeks off that) and in that time all of my mental health issues spiraled. I was using it as a crutch for kicking booze, and honestly, I think I was not healed enough for more of that and it made it worse.

Anyway, that’s my roundabout way of wondering out loud if early recovery is a particularly hairy time if you are predisposed to psychosis. Mine is trauma, I think, but results in what feels like unpredictable and out of control behavior which is scary to me, and I’m sure those around me. Coping skills have helped.

sorry to not be precise and talk about me with your question, this is written in a spirit of talking across a campfire and not trying to fix you.

I’ve got bipolar as well which was out of control when I was drinking regularly. The symptoms have calmed down a lot for me now though although sometimes it’s very, very hard to control myself. At least I’m not an entitled raging maniac like I used to be and I am so grateful for that.
