Does anyone else talk to themselves?
Does anyone else talk to themselves?
I was diagnosed a few years ago with Bipolar 2. Think I had it for most of my life and some emotional trauma brought it to the surface about 12 years back, but I was only professionally diagnosed more than two years ago.
I talk to myself. Its almost like its therapy to me, to get my thoughts out there. Its almost like I am narrating my life sometimes. Sometimes I pace while doing it. Other times while driving.
Am I alone?

You are definitely not alone, my wife cracks up at me walking around or sitting, even driving, my lips moving while I chatter away to myself, usually silent but sometimes with sound too Call me crazy but it's just part of my unique self!
Sometimes I practice voice impressions, as I am a huge comedy fan. I had the God Father nailed for a while. Herbert from Family Guy. Russell Brand is another. I'm currently trying to nail a solid Fargo accent.
So I have excuses to talk to myself.
It's comforting to know that none of us are
really alone in the things we do. So many do
the same, similar things quite often.
While i'm in my element, backyard amongst
the flowers, I talk to the birds, butterflies, all
those little critters coming out and around to
visit.
They like me often need some human kindness.
And I also talk to my Higher Power for strength, guidance,
protection each and everyday I wake up alive and sober.

I will do it if I am working alone.
Example I will be fixing lawnmower and just say out loud now get that screw out out without stripping it. Don't forget how that part goes... Don't loose the 10 mm like you always do.
So what whats the shame in it, who cares. I stay on track that way.

Yep, if I'm alone in my apartment. Or I talk to my cat. Sometimes I pretend a friend is there and talk like I would talk to them. It's a way of working through issues without actually having to put it on someone else.
Notch8: Thanks for starting this thread. Lots of good input here.
I remembered hearing in the past that it is good to, for example, practice a speech to be given first out loud in front of a mirror, to practice out loud for a job interview; in other words, speaking out loud to gain confidence, etc.
It does make a difference for me to say things out loud when I need a "pep talk" before facing something very difficult. That way, I stay more focused and don't get as distracted as when I try to process what I want to do or say all "inside my head." I get more accomplished this way, it helps me to stay on track.

I think we all have a dialogue going on in our head. Or am i projecting ?
My thoughts do sometimes tumble out of my mouth. When others are around they may comment.
But, i never get the feeling that they think it's that unusual.

I feel brain-dead a fair amount of the time. Substance abuse is what gives me that inner dialogue. I'm jealous in a way. Also, my mom always walked around muttering to herself when I was a kid and it creeped me out. I do pretend I'm hosting a cooking show and talk to an invisible crowd whenever I'm cooking alone.
