It's no problem if you haven't been to him much, he's still your Dr. Just explain to him what's going on and that you need help with it. He'll ask you some questions to verify it is depression and not something else, and he should be able to help you out. As Allison said that's really the best place to start.

Yes, ask your Dr for a referral to a good psychiatrist and counselor.
I, too, have bipolar disorder and am an alcoholic. The only way I've found to work for me is to get on/stay on medication, therapy, and staying sober with the help of AA
