Inward bullying and how that impacts those we love

The Damage of a Difficult Mother & How She Helped Her Child Heal | TODAY.com

Eesh...yes, I have been guilty of this. I have been able to correct this behavior in myself quite a bit, but this article was a much-needed reminder.

There is something I have always wondered. This story talks about those inner dialogues in which we tell ourselves we are 'fat' or 'ugly' or 'stupid'. I understand how those things can be internalized if we have been told so over and over again by parents, boyfriends, etc.

But what if we have never been told anything of the sort? My parents never told my sister and I how pretty we are, but they didn't rag on us about being fat or stupid or anything else. I've never had a boyfriend or even my ex-husband say anything like that.

--and yet I still struggle with this self-criticism sometimes.

Thoughts?

I have been reading about emotional negligence. With emotional negliegence the person does not need to hear the bullying from another person. The child will internalize emotional as it must be because "I'm....".
