A family friend who is an acoholic

I didn't even know it - and her story rings a familiar bell in my head. A year ago she lost her job because she had the smell of alcohol on her. She is an RN and stands to lose her license if she can't pull thru this. She has three young children, younger than mine.

I just hate addiction and what it does to families.

I guess like so many with my AH, I would have never guessed she was an alcoholic, never would have guessed. We were in the same circle of friends and we talked often and there were no indications of her drinking. It might be possible that I knew her when she was in her sober period - not sure. But my AH was "functioning" and "fooling" others around him, she sure did fool me!

Like all alcoholics, she is progressing in her disease. My heart pains for this family.

I would just like to ask if you all could lift this family up in your thoughts and prayers that they can find peace and serenity at this difficult time.

KTT, i was in a group with a nurse who had not lost her license. At least, I don't think she had. She seemed to be on some type of suspension until she could demonstrate that she was no longer drinking. Seems to me that she was having to do a great deal to get credibility back. Not that that is wrong or harsh. People who work in the medical field have to have their wits about them. No question. It just seemed that she loved her work and was trying hard to get back into it. I feel for your friend and hope she can turn things around. I absolutely hate how alcohol can destroy people.

The other problem with people in the medical field is that there is often an addiction to medications as well, or temptation to develop one in an effort to hide the evidence of drinking. I know a few nurses in AA who had to jump through a few hoops in the course of their recovery.

Good Morning

In our hospital we offer the EAP program to assist employees with addictions, mental health etc. I would find it hard to believe that your friend was not offered the assistance. As we all know, unfortunately there is not much anyone can do to " help " the addict. This has to come from within. Hopefully almost losing her job/ license will be enough of a push to set her in the right direction.
