In my experience, addicts want to equate "unconditional love" with "put up with all my crappy behavior no matter how awful it is." But that's like comparing apples to oranges.

Imagine this: your wife stops feeding the dog and stops giving it affection. Every time it walks by, she grabs its tail or hurts it. She creates pain and uncertainty in its life--and your dog can open the front door and walk out any time.
I don't imagine that dog would stick around, do you?
