I just want to correct one thing in my previous post. A protective order wouldn't necessarily PREVENT him from contacting you, but it would PROHIBIT it. That gives the police and courts the power to enforce the order if he violates it.
It's important to know that an order doesn't necessarily prevent a determined abuser from contacting you or otherwise violating it, but it does allow for swift consequences--again, before simple contact escalates to something scarier or more dangerous.
Just wanted to clear that up, lest people think that a piece of paper (even with the power of the court behind it) is like some kind of force-field.
