Hi TerpGal, the HP thing was a real big deal for me for a long time as well. I have working a Buddhist practice for the last 3 years, mostly pure land with some zen thrown in as well.
I have an HP but it can not be defined. As long as it isn't my ego, or as it is sometimes called in Pure Land, the monkey mind.
Once I quit trying to define it I was a lot more comfortable with the idea of a higher power.
