Separating from siblings

I come from a family of alcoholics and have three brothers and a sister. My older brother and myself have had the hardest time being sober over the years, but I feel I'm at the start of a new life. Yesterday, my wife and I had a long and fruitful talk about my relationship with my family, and we decided the best way forward is going to be total detachment from them. Many of you are familiar with the criticism, put-downs, bad behavior, hard feelings etc that go with addiction; I can't stay sober for long dealing with this insanity, so I'm moving forward sans craziness.

Someone on SR wrote that you shouldn't accept any bad behavior from your family that you wouldn't accept from strangers or friends. Not everyone deserves front row seats in your life.

I think that is a very good decision. I had to put a lot of distance between myself and my family too, until I came up with a plan and boundaries that protected me.

I still stayed living 3500 miles away though
