Adapting vs Enabling
adapt verb
: to change your behavior so that it is easier to live in a particular place or situation
The word adapt has come up a couple of times and helped me think things through a little better.
A sister in family group shared how she hides everything before her brother comes over for a visit.
The Doctor in the group said "Don't adapt to his addiction".
The word enabling has always made me think of how I can or can't help my son with his addiction.
Adapting put my focus more on me and how I adapt my behavior to my son's addiction.
I can think of many ways I have adapted to make my life seem easier with my son's addiction.
The healthy ways of adapting are more uncomfortable at first, but don't change with every new situation my son finds himself in with his active addiction.
