A seemingly silly question.
This might sound silly, but how does one 'work the steps'? I've read about them, know what they are, pondered them a bit in my situation, but.. Is that the same thing? How do you know when to move on to the next one?
First things first.
One usually (and I believe should) works the steps with a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who has some clean time and has worked the steps with another alcoholic. The sponsor will help determine when it is time to move on to the next step
It is all about us helping one another.

I live the steps in my everyday life.
Pass on my own experiences,
strengths and hopes of what
it was like before during and
after drinking.
Similar to the 10 Commandments.
A guideline to living a better life.

"working" the steps has become lingo. i think the word is used because, well, it is work. like you work at being honest, at trusting in a higher power. we all work at life's tasks.
getting a sponsor is an excellent suggestion.
i never felt much need to have a sponsor, then when i decided i would do better with one, i could not find one!! it takes courage to seek someone out and ask, but that is a step in the process, too. in admitting that you have a need. it is humbling. you may have to knock on a couple of doors (figuratively) but it's well worth it. being a newcomer will put you in the perfect position.
