when my niece was in foster care, they would do archaic, mean things like withhold dessert if she didn't eat her lima beans, but she had to sit at the table while everyone else had their ice cream. i told her many, many times, hoping it would sink in,

"when someone abusive says or does something mean, it's NEVER about you; it's ALWAYS about them."

doesn't make it not feel rotten, but at least i hope that if she (you, me) is treated badly, it isn't because she's bad.

now, way to go for making the decision to not be around his ugly and poopy mouth!
