As a parent, I know how hard it is to actually put our child in jail. It's like the biggest betrayal in the world, even though the child is violent and dangerous to the point of killing us! Its a pickle to be in as a parent.
Mom needs protection. He's sick, he's not well, and he will only get worse. One day in his fit pitching violence he will cause someone's death.
Do what you need to do to protect your mother's life. She's incapable of making the decision for herself.
