Any suggestions for a 21st birthday gift
I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas for my daughters 21 birthday gift. She has completed her 30 day inpatient rehab and has been at their recovery house for the last 30 days. Seems to have a positive attitude. On Monday morning she went to court and had her 2 felony charges reduced to mistemeaners. Is on probation for 2 years. On Monday afternoon she had another court date in another county for DUI and was only put on supervised supervision for 1 year but is still able to drive, so needless to say right now she is pretty happy. This being her 21st, I'd like to get her a special gift, however for the last 3 years every gift we have given her has either been lost or I feel traded for drugs or alcohol. So on Sunday we celebrate her birthday her birthday, Mothers day and my daughter in laws graduation from college. If anyone has any thoughts I'd appreciate your input. I am totally racking my brain and any help would be appreciated. Thanks
my daughter is having a bday next week too. we've decided - homemade cupcakes, cards, balloons, simple flowers - from us and family.
folks that would typically give her cash and gifts are giving $ instead to my husband and i - to pay her health insurance (which we've offered to provide through the end of the year).
some nice recovery books or a journal to write in might be good choices?
blessings, k
(glad your daughter is doing well)

How about a gift certificate to a day spa, or a gym membership. She has to change her life pattern. I guess it depends on how much money you have to work with.
Wouldn't it be nice to enroll her and pay the turiton to a votech class like cosmotology or some other field of interest she has. It's a gift that will keep her focused in the right direction. Girls that age love hair and make up.

Last year I was in a quandry about getting my daughter something for graduation. We had had a long, hard year (AH refused treatment and divorced me) and she and I had been here holding down the house alone (son got a job/school 100 miles away). I found a nice, sweet necklace for her; a little diamond heart on a silver chain. I notice she wears it almost all the time. I thought it could be a reminder of how much she means to me and something she can keep forever.
p.s. I can't believe she is moving back home later today for the summer, after her first year away at college....

I would say a gift certificate to a day spa too maybe even a mother/daughter day! They love that at that age, heck I would love one of those now! If money is tight-maybe a pedicure and manicure...if she is into scrapbooking-a gift certificate to a Michaels, Creative Memories ...www.creativememories.com they have classes-you could look for in your area-
Jewelry-My step father bought me a heart locket when he legally adopted me! I still have it till this day-was a treasure-
Good luck!

Thanks for your ideas, unfortunately we have been through this in the past and she has many recovery books. We tried schooling in the past and she has droped out. The gym membership sounds good, she says she wants to lose weight. I like the necklace idea, however we gave her one 2 years ago and now it is gone. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Hi frustrated,
Honey I have been here too. My son was/is a drug addict. My heart was broken when I realized things that I had bought him with alot of thought and goodness were hocked for money. In Australia means traded for money. It hurt me deeply to think he did that. Each year I would buy him nice gifts, TV, stereo system etc etc. never saw them again.
On his 21st Birthday I thought here we go again, what ever I buy him he is going to trade in for cash.
Instead, I wrote him a letter telling him how much I loved him and even though he was in this misery, I was proud he was my son. I told him that even though his dad and me had split up it wasnt the end of the world, we still loved him and he could make it. I gave him a little box with the hair from his first hair cut. He was jobless, and was living off the street back then. We had nice home he could of lived in but I kicked him out. 2 years later he was back living with us on conditions of course and you know what he still has that letter in his wallet and the box with the his hair. It meant alot to him I guess.
I would give something from the heart. Things dont matter.

I love that gift justjo gave her son! Maybe if you have a special picture of the two of you in happier times, you could make her a copy (even frame it!) and write a letter like that, too. Who wouldn't be thrilled with that!?
