I Like Myself

I didn't when I was drinking.
Couldn't look in the mirror.
Couldn't look people in the eye.
The bad was the end of the world and the good was tolerable.
Now the bad is tolerable and the good is amazing.

If you're struggling, it gets better. Not just for me either. I know several people that are happy sober and were a complete wreck when they were active in addiction. I'm beginning to think it's the standard.

I don't know if it's the standard, because I don't know how many people find it. But it is most definitely the desired outcome. When you like yourself, so much of the other stuff falls in line or falls away. I can live with a lot of my faults and manage quite well. But being a drunk became a revolting part of myself that I could no longer abide. When I realized early on that I was done with drinking forever, there was a dramatic flip flop in the way I saw myself, and I liked what I was seeing. That has yet to go away.

It is really amazing when we raise our life condition, self esteem, change our behaviors and start to see the positive results of living sober. There is so much happiness in the day now. Moments of true laughter and being content.

I relate to this. Just posted a thread yesterday about looking through my old posts here on SR and feeling sad about that reality. I used to think there were many things wrong with me and was on the mission to find and change those things - turns out it's much much simpler and easier than I thought. Just had to stop drinking and "magically", most of those disturbing feelings and behaviors are gone with it, they don't even come up in my mind unless I look at the old evidence. I'm not sure this is standard as I've heard enough reports people struggling a great deal sober, but it seems to be my case.

I feel the same way. I hated myself when I was drinking but not anymore.

I'm glad you're finding happiness in your life.

Birds flying high, you know how I feel
Sun in the sky, you know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me, yeah
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me, ooh
And I'm feeling good
Fish in the sea, you know how I feel
River running free, you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree, you know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me
And I'm feeling good
Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don't you know?
Butterflies all havin' fun, you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done, that's what I mean
And this old world, is a new world
And a bold world for me, yeah-yeah
Stars when you shine, you know how I feel
Scent of the pine, you know how I feel
Oh, freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me
I'm feeling good
