Dreams

I’ve had a lot of “drinking dreams” recently. They were frequent early on but now, a few a week. Last night I dreamt I was in nyc for an event. I was having a great time, sober. Everyone noticed I looked great, acting normally. Fast forward next morning, everyone was calling me telling me I had stabbed someone with a huge knife and robbed a convenience store. It was so vivid that I woke up sweating. Scared the **** out of me. My old life used to be just like this except it wasn’t a dream. Maybe not quite to that extent, but similar. Maybe my brains trying to tell me something; who knows. I just want these dreams to go away.

Drinking dreams are really unpleasant and had me few of those too. Waking up and for a few minutes feeling sick, anxious and full of regret, shame, guilt and self loathing, it sucks!

However, try and turn it into something to be grateful for. Say to yourself how grateful you are that this is not your life anymore and use it as motivation for keeping on the right path. It’s the perfect reminder why we are sober without the actual consequences of drinking to prove it to yourself. x

Acc,

I still have drinking dreams sometimes.

Usually involves serious regret knowing I will carry the burden of a relapse.

Then I wake up and am so happy it was just a dream.

Probably a good thing to have those dreams because it is almost like a free relapse.

They offer all of the regret and none of the damage.

I am not asking to have them any more frequently as I prefer dreams of great wealth, happiness, and love.

Thanks.

When I was early on in my recovery, putting my head on the pillow was like going out to the bars, except drinking always resulted in deep regret.

Then I would wake up sober and fairly frightened.

I have been sober a while now and I still have them sometimes.

But I don't drink.

I still have dreams about having arguments and fights with my deceased parents, also, which are just as problematic.

Nonetheless, I sleep fairly well at night.

Sorry you are having these dreams.

Glad you're with us.
