diarrhea

Hi everyone,
Off alcohol for 6 days after many years of daily abuse.....excessive gas started on day 2 or 3 and now diarrhea since yesterday. I read this can happen....anyone else experience this embarrassing side effect?

Yes 100% I used psyillium husk (main ingredient in Metamucil for a 1/4 the price).

Worked well

That has the opposite effect on me.

I've used immodium before, on my drs advice.

but if it goes on too long, I'd see your Dr about it tranquilseeker- it can be a very dehydrating and weakening condition

I agree with Dee, psyllium will exacerbate the problem.. If the diarrhea persists you should consult a physician. I, too, have used Imodium but it is a short term solution and should only be used after consulting a MD to eliminate potentially serious issues. I suspect, though, that your “green apple quickstep” will resolve itself with continued sobriety and a healthful diet.

It didnt- hence why I suggested it

"To also treat diarrhea. Soluble fiber absorbs water in the digestive tract and swells, adding more bulk to your stool".

Yes I have had bad diarrhoea trying to give up alcohol. It is unpleasant it gets you down and you have to clean your toilet several times which can increase bad feelings.

The key purpose of withdrawal symptoms is to get you back on the alcohol just remember that.

Personally diarrhea is not as bad as the anxiety involved in dealing with bad decisions made when drunk.

Make sure you buy some good quality quilted toilet roll preferably Ali Vera. That should help.

It takes a few weeks for the plumbing to work itself out. Plus, I was never on a balanced/healthy diet when drinking. Eating clean helped my digestive system get in order.

No med advice, but whether I have the runs or not, when home I always use a smallish water container to wash my backside after the #2.

TMI?

Be sure to keep hydrated. Apple juice and apple butter have worked for me. And anything with ginger. But I am on ulcer meds as well.

Alcohol demolishes your digestive tract, along with pretty much everything else. Keep going with your sobriety, eat a healthy diet, and things will pan out.
