Hi - I was researching post acute withdrawal syndrome and found this forum. I don’t have many people to talk to about the journey of getting sober, so I wanted to join your community and learn from all of you. I am almost 6 months sober but still struggling. Thanks and be well.
Hi Purple!
Six months is awesome!
Read around and post often--it works if you work it! Here's a thread where we do a daily commitment to stay sober:

Hi, thank you. Yes, I found various PAWS threads and I see I am not alone. I have recently been having bouts of terrible anxiety and impending doom, intermixed with very low lows... no motivation. This came as a surprise because the past few months had been pretty good - once I got through a severe withdrawal. Just yesterday I saw a new psychiatrist and am going back to therapy.

Thanks - I am having such bad anxiety and depression and sense of doom that I thought I was going crazy. My doctor feels it’s normal and prescribed medication and MORE therapy... He said it might be 2 years before the real me is back. Can’t believe I wasted 3 years wrecking my life and bringing shame onto myself and family.
Yeah, it does take longer than we'd like.
It was nearly a year for me to feel free of the free-floating anxiety. I believe I'm still on a healing path at 4+ years, but the first six months to a year was definitely a challenge. Congrats on six months! It's worth it to continue. Try not to dwell on the past, or any negative thoughts that come up. You aren't that (past) person any more. What I do is just observe the thought and then move on to the next thing...not grabbing on to things that will make me feel bad. Observing and letting go.
I hope your therapist and this site will help you get through.

Great to have you with us, Purple. It's very reassuring to share thoughts with those who understand what you're going through.
I speak only for myself, but I drank 30 yrs. & it didn't take me 2 yrs. to feel optimistic & hopeful about my life the majority of the time. I hope being here will help relieve some of your anxiety. I agree with what Bim said - try not to relive your past. There's nothing we can do about it now, but learn from it. I'm glad you're seeing a therapist.
