New here and need help

I am actively in my addiction right now. I have been trying get sober for a while, but have had no long-term luck. The longest I’ve had was 9 days a couple of months back.

I was sober for over ten years and relapsed. Then I got sober again for nearly six years. I have been relapsing now for over five years. I am the sickest I’ve ever been. No doubt there is truth to the highly progressive nature of this nasty alcohol addiction.

I have been to treatment. I have done the deal with AA. I went to Smart Recovery too. I just can’t seem to STAY sober.

I am feeling very physically sick now. I have never suffered these physical issues in the past. I can barely even eat food. I can see now for the first time this is going to kill me.

Help! I can’t do this alone.

Paige, Welcome!

You are not alone and we do understand how destructive alcoholism is.

Welcome Paige. I am new to. I can relate to your health issue getting worse as well as the drinking getting worse. Hope we can stay sober together.

It has nothing to do with LUCK and you know this..... you've been through the process and you've been down the road.....

It has to do with CHOICE and ACTION.

You have CHOSEN in the past to get sober.....

And then you have CHOSEN to drink again.

You have chosen and ACTED in support of sobriety....

And you have CHOSEN and ACTED in the direction of addiction.

Yes - it's progressive.

Yes - it gets worse.

Yes - it gets harder.

BUT.....

It's still just as simple, every moment, every day, as CHOICE and ACTION.

CHOOSE sobriety.

ACT in support of that choice.

Repeat.

AA, rehab, SMART recovery, counseling, exercise, therapy, mental health treatment..... all of these are frameworks and tools for ACTION and for SUPPORTING THE CHOICE.

But you hold the key for the choice.

So - choose it. NOW. And then act. Then keep choosing. Then keep acting.....

You can.

And you're not alone.

Thank you all so much... this sounds weird— but I have some hope because this is the first time I can see how much my addiction is really affecting me. I used to sail through without any consequences..

All you said is true. By “luck” I meant “success”. Oh I know luck has nothing to do with it!

I know what I need to do. I am taking those first steps now.

Thanks for what you just said. I agree with this completely. But appreciate hearing it since I evidently needed to.

How are you feeling at the moment?
At the moment I feel raw. Nothing to mask my emotions. But I also feel a sense of relief that I am taking steps in the right direction.

SO good to hear from you - I was literally just wondering how you were and signed in to find out
Yes, I remember the feeling well and used to resort to ice cream and all the things I loved as a kid - a kind of rebirth, if you like. Treat yourself to something, it really helps.
Really happy to see you're still here

I'm glad you're here. The "staying" part has been challenging for me too. You did great for ten years? I haven't been sober that long since before I started drinking! If you did it before, you can do it again.
