I have been drinking for 20 years and I want to stop I dont know if I can Im going to try and stop cold turky. If I do will I get sick or should I wean myself off? I don't drink thru the day I drink at night until I go to sleep.I have never tried to stop
HEY AMIGO,WELCOME.
DID YOU DRINK EVERY DAY?HOW MUCH?
I WOULD SUGGEST SEEING YOUR DR.,BE HONEST WITH THEM.
DETOXING FROM ALCOHOL CAN BE DANGEROUS.
SEE A PROFESSIONAL.
STICK AROUND GREAT BUNCH OF FOLKS HERE.

Hey 3 Amigo!! Welcome to SR!! The most wonderful recovery board on the planet!! I agree with Ted, you may want to see your Dr. We want you to be safe. I was an every to every other day drinker and I didn't have any medical problems detoxing. But everyone is different! Just be safe and believe me sober is the way to go!

Just for tomorrow, don't drink! It's just one day!! And if you feel like drinking, post here or call another recovering alcoholic!!
It really works!!
Hugs to you my friend,

If you want to stop and yet can't make it one day, you need to ask yourself why that might be. I gotta echo the suggestion to go see a doctor and be honest with him/her.
One thing I really believe today is that the train you are currently on only goes in one direction and only makes three stops: jails, institutions, and death. No one can make you decide to quit drinking one day at a time, but if you make that decision there are a whole heap of people who will welcome you and help you find the way. All you have to do is ask. Before I started recovery, I never would have believed how many warm, caring, and thoughtful people I would meet just by finding the courage to ask for help. In my family, the men just didn't admit to problems, talk about problems (unless they were someone elses), and by God we certainly would never ask for help with problems (since we didn't have any in the first place ). What a sad way to exist.
You can do this thing and you are worth it.

Hello 3 Amigos--Welcome to SR. I am an alcoholic named Laura. I could not have become sober without the help of AA. Talking to a doctor is great advice. You could also look into going to a treatment center. I went to treatment in February and it saved my life. Also, like other posters have said, just take it one day at a time. Don't drink today. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Best of luck and keep posting and let us know how it is going.
