Alcohol is a killer
I found out recently that an old friend passed away from alcohol. He drank so much when he was finally taken to the hospital the doctors told him his liver was gone and he would need a transplant. He did not get one and passed away. Another person I knew, the wife of a friend, drank herself to death as well. I know I can't drink anymore and I am lucky to have survived. My old friend, we drank and did drugs together back in the day. I had not talked to him in many years, so I had no idea he had gotten so bad and had passed away. It is a shocking reminder of the killing power of alcohol.
Sorry for your loss.
I was told, plainly, in my second stint in inpatient:
One third get lasting recovery without relapses. One third will relapse once or more, but gain lasting recovery. One third will die due to their addiction.
I cannot speak to the veracity of those numbers. However, I don't fall in the first category, so it's 50/50 if I go back out. I don't like those odds, so I prefer to stay on this side.
Thanks for posting. These reminders are ALWAYS useful.

Sorry for your loss Jim I really wish there would be more emphasis put on what a horrible drug alcohol is! We hear the dangers of crack, heroin, etc yet alcohol probably killsmore people and ruins more lives..we just don't hear about it as much
I know quite a few people who have died due to alcohol. Sometimes suddenly and catastrophically, sometimes slowly and painfully. Either way, dead is dead. Sorry for your loss, Jim, but thanks for the reminder that alcohol is a killer.
Jim, I am sorry to read of the death of your friend.
Those four words in the title of this thread should be on every bottle of the stuff. It took someone who lived near me (I did not know the person, it was in the local paper) at age 22

Horribly and slowly and traumatically for everyone. ... even though I hadn't seen him for years I was gutted, talented musician too.... I still drank though. ... how stupid. No more. .. thanks for reminding me.

I have been asked how I could quit so suddenly one day. I had never thought of quitting, I liked drinking just fine. Seeing her in hospice, jaundiced and already gone was the saddest, most awful thing ever. Liquor holds no appeal. Grateful for all of you. Grateful to be sober.

I remember meeting the singer of a smaller band a few years ago that was bright yellow from jaundice. I got a photo with him and the color difference was really shocking, he ended up dying from liver failure about at 41.
Also a friend of a friend ended up violently puking blood and was rushed to the hospital where they found he had cirrhosis and needed a transplant to live. He was literally on death's door when a liver came in and he seems to be ok now, but just hearing about that experience would scare the crap out of anyone, and he was only in his late 30's.
