So it begins...

Just seen my first Christmas advert of 2016 and yup you guessed it "cheap deals on on alcohol". Do we really have to deal with 2 months of it being bombarded in our faces for the next 2 months!

This is my first Christmas since the start of my sobriety and just wondering if anyone had any tips ,rituals or activities they do that helps them get through the build up/festive season.

James

Good question - mind you, I don't think it makes any difference to me if the booze is cheap or not.
Am still a little nervous about the events I can't miss during the party season

James, it's early enough that you can come up with some new things to do at Christmas. Are you interested in skiing/skating or outdoor activities like that? How about coming up with a plan to raise money for a specific family in your neighbourhood who can't afford to buy gifts for their children or a turkey for Christmas? Give it some thought and come up with ideas that keep you away from alcohol and that can create new and wonderful memories for you.

I used SR a lot my first Xmas.

However many ads I saw I knew I was on the right track by quitting drinking.

I stayed away from all parties etc that first Xmas...even my family Xmas which was a boozefest in those days.

I didn't stay home and mope tho - I did a lot of volunteer work and I went to a lot of things where I knew alcohol would not be involved - picnics, cafes, movies etc.

I had a quiet but very rewarding first sober Xmas

I've been volunteering as the designated driver. Perfect excuse to stay sober.

Am following this as this time of year through to new year (heck, until school holidays end to be honest) is typically a binge fest season. I do not want to end this year as it started- hungover, depressed and ashamed. I can think of least 8 occassions where I would usually drink due to birthday/ Christmas/ new year get togethers. It's going to take some new tools and coping mechanisms to get through this period.
