Hi. Have just registered and am not really sure what to expect. I have got to the stage where I know I have to stop drinking before I lose everyone and everything that is so dear to me

Hi Lizard64, you will get great support here, I have the same situation as you, well we all have really. If I don't stop I loose everything from family, job, health. Its is now impossible for me to drink as the consequences so dire, I am recently clean and struggling so much with body and mind, SR is a great place to talk with like minds. Welcome and hope you doing well.

Welcome to SR. It is a great place to pour your heart out and learn valuable lessons from the experience and insights of others. You can be candid and expect non-judgemental and useful guidance. Good luck.

Unhappy

Thank you so much for welcoming me: tyou I'm so scared and anxious at the moment - I really need to do this but can't imagine my life without a drink!! I've drank heavily since I was about 14. I have had times of sobriety but have always drank again at the slightest sign of stress!!

Hi Lizard, it's normal to have the anxious feelings at this time. But, you can do this. Have faith that you will be able to get through the day without alcohol. It's a good idea to have a plan for how you will support your recovery.

Yes. I relate to that entirely. That's why, for me like so many other alcoholics, recovery needed to be about learning new and diffrent ways of thinking and beings and dealing with life on life's terms without remaining a puppet to my fears and anxieties. The first step for me was realising that my cure-all (alcohol ) really cured absolutely bugger all. Otherwise I wouldn't have got in a state. I needed to try something else. Luckily for me, my step dad (RIP) was an AAer, so that idea didn't seem so alien to me as it might otherwise had done, so I went there as well as reading and posting on here. For the first 6 month I just read and posted and went to meetings. Then, when I finally nearly went crazy with anxiety and depression 6 or 7 month in, I finally decided it was time to actually try doing some of what had been suggested. And that was when I started getting better. For someone with a good academic record I'm an amazingly slow learner lol. I needed 'Recovery for Dummies' .

Anyway. Have you thought about making a sobriety plan for yourself yet? It'd be a good start. There's a great thread with lots of info and links on it that is worth exploring in detail...
