Back in the day, a person called out shotgun when they wanted to sit in the front seat next to the driver of a car.

From what I've heard, the term shotgun came about from the stagecoach days when an armed man sat next to the stagecoach driver.

I don't know its meaning when used in a thread.

oh you said that was 'back in the day'... Now I feel old! lol. My kids actually say it too because they've heard my husband and I use the term.

LoL, I'm sure it's still used by many young people today; I don't have children, so I haven't heard it used in a while. My only reference was when my peers and I used the term decades ago
