Seeking Volunteer Opportunities
I'm feeling great in my new life and would like to "pay it forward" a little. So, I'm looking for volunteer activities in my area. I know there's a need, but there don't seem to be a lot of organized volunteer efforts to help addicts in Syracuse. Today, I used my day off to reach out to 14 local sober living homes.
The folks who've befriended me here and become penpals know I'm not really a hand-holding sort. I'm more of a problem-solving sort. So, I'm definitely not a good candidate to offer comfort and inspiration, but I can certainly help with things like transportation and housekeeping services. Surely people need to get to meetings, doctors' appointments, etc.
This time last year, I would have killed for a ride home from the E.R., or for someone to bring me some groceries so I could eat, or even just run a load of dishes for me.
Syracuse is not exactly a "recovery Mecca." In fact, we're not a "Mecca" of anything...except that I read somewhere we have the highest per capita poverty rate in the country. It's kind of sad to think that in addition to very few flavors of recovery program from which to choose, plus an 8-month waiting list to get into most of them, there's a dearth of volunteers to keep the people fed and cared for while they're waiting their turns.
Wish me luck!
