Hardly a Newcomer

I have knee replacement surgery on Tuesday.

The old one has been below par since I broke the leg to pieces in '83.

What am I to do about pain meds? I don't think It'll be an issue. I was pure booze. But, I've heard it could be a trigger.

Welcome back Olive

I think it's always a good idea to let your Dr in on your past and have the discussion on alternatives for non narcotic pain relief.

It may be a little late for that now? I don't know the US system.

If you take the meds and you find there's a potential for abuse, you know what to do - contact your Dr

best wishes for the surgery
D

I’ve heard the same, but I don’t believe in triggers, it’s a term that came from AA and NA and made its way into rehab. It’s a toxic concept and an excuse that sets addicts up for relapse. It’s an excuse not unlike the idea that rehab clients pick-up at rehab i.e. “my addict is out to get me”, as if there’s a duality. There’s no duality, there an individual lacking coping skills to what sets off alcohol addicts and other addicts into relapse. Leaning a new design for living, which is a new way of thinking facilitates sobriety which is lack of fear of relapse.

I was a pure boozer like you; I was also a tobacco addict. I'm an old man, born during WWII. I've had some surgeries over the past few years that required pain meds, oxycodone to be specific. It worked well for pain, but I didn’t like the overall effect of feeling tired.

Good luck with your surgery. I had surgery and took Vicodin for a few days. They didn't trigger me at all. Alcohol was my problem too.
