Hello, new here
Hi everyone I'm new to the community, day 1 and just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm a 29 year old male who has been struggling with the booze and finally realized it needs to end and I can't do this alone.
My drinking has now escalated to bingeing pretty hard every second day, and even though I convince myself on the day I drink that nothing positive will come from it I still go ahead and do it. Looking at going to a local beginners AA meeting this week and also checking out AVRT which I found through lurking around here.
Apologies for the long post, and I look forward to meeting you all

Welcome to SR. I admire you for realising you need to make changes at such a young age. You can save yourself lots of heartache and health problems by acting now. The early days are challenging at times but just keep posting your thoughts and worries here. There is always someone with experience that can help put things back into perspective for you. Stay strong.

Thanks for the responses and kind words.
I will be trying to read and post here often, the support and advice given around here is quite amazing to be honest.
Is there anything in particular that helped anyone get through the first few days? I know it wouldn't have been easy for anyone here, but for me the first few days I am constantly fighting myself. I also think a lot of it for me has become very habitual every day or second day on the way home from work stop at a bottle shop (there are so many in my area!) Even though I have been telling myself all day not to do it and nothing good will ever come of it, I still somehow find myself drinking... sounds very weak I know!!

Great to hear nymets, congrats on the 34 days! really good to know there are people in similar situations here.
Hi Jay! I just wanted to say hi & welcome! The only advice I can give you is what I've read here ( as I'm a drug addict, but a lot of the same principles apply! ) )
Get yourself outside support asap ( which you're already going to do! )
Come here often, even if you don't feel like posting... read, educate yourself!
And I'll let others pick it up from here!

Hi Jay. Welcome. I'm new here too and am on day 8 of no alcohol (from being an everyday drinker for years). I'm feeling better and better each day and never want to drink again. Whatever it is you're trying to achieve though, I wish you the best.

Hi John, good to hear you're doing well. Complete and continued sobriety is definitely what I am trying to achieve. I have tried to moderate and drink 'normally' a few times and I know it just doesn't work for me. The one thing that I do have working for me is a completely supportive partner, we have just recently married and want to start a family, so as well as doing this for myself and my own health and happiness, that is a great motivator for me.

Congratulations on your marriage - you are so lucky to have a supportive partner. I have one as well so I know how important that is.
You can do this, one step at a time. I went to my first AA meeting last week (managed to make it to day 8 as of today) and what a huge support and relief it was. Good Luck and keep on posting here.

Hi Jaywil, I will reiterate what others have said, read, read, read this site. Something will eventually click for you and you will gather your own motivation and technique to get through the early days. Quite frankly, the ONLY thing that won't help you in the early days is drinking. I wish you the very best.
Welcome Jay, good call and well done for finding the motivation to stop..
Remember, you're not fighting yourself. You're fighting a force that tells you you're fighting yourself. You're in charge every single step of the way!
You'll find plenty of support here, I find SR a great source of comfort and strength when things get tough.
Each small step you take helps pave the way for bigger and better things!
Stay safe

Hi JayWil, only day two for me so I can offer no advice. I was like you, I'd tell myself all day at work that I was going to refrain that night. Then five o'clock would come and... Vicious cycle. Good to see you here, I know the SR support I had been reading before I decided I was done with the drink really gave me the courage I needed. We can do this!
