Sobriety- I am such a changed person
Sobriety- I am such a changed person
Just sharing a situation which occurred over the holidays.
Two nights before Christmas I was at my mother's house in California with my 18 year old son and 16 year old daughter, visiting Mom and Grandma for Christmas.
My daughter kept asking me to borrow my truck and really wouldn't provide a good answer to my why. Finally she admitted she wanted to go buy me a Christmas present. My daughter has driven for 8 months now, I am a little protective and we were out of town. After some thought I let her take my truck.
20 minutes later, my phone rang and it was my daughter crying, saying my truck wont acclerrate or move, she was lost and scared. My Mom immediately took me to her, where I found her locked in the car crying and scared.
I got my truck to a nearby repair shop, and knew something was very wrong with the vehicle.
Long story short, my daughter put a full tank of diesel in my regular gas truck as a christmas present for me and had driven it. Just an honest loving mistake and the repair bill is not cheap.
Why do I share this:
The drunk ktw would have:
1)Been too drunk to go find her
2)Yelled, screamed and cussed his daughter in the middle of the road two nights before xmas
3) Made it a point to medicate my self pity and ruin the family xmas
The sober ktw did
1) Went immediately found and comforted his daughter
2) Kept his emotions in check
3) Showed no signs of anger and actually laughed about the situation
4) enrolled his daughter in a minor automotive mechanics seminar held for new drivers as an xmas gift
5) Did not self medicate, had no self pity and kept realizing sobriety has changed my life

That is fantastic. And, I bet your daughter will be sharing that story with her own children one day, and she will be reminded what a good role model you were in that situation.

Its amazing how truly different we are when sober. Im the same way. My kids did teenage things. When i was drinking i would explode at them. Honestly thinking they meant to "do me wrong". Alcohol is jekyll and hyde serum. Great job on your handling of it.
