Can you guys help me through this?
I'm at my family's thanksgiving party. There's an open bottle of white on the counter and no one around. I could pound a glass and no one would notice. It's literally making me weep. I'm not used to recovery in this context. I feel very far away from everything I've been doing at home to establish my sobriety. Please keep me tuned in.
Leave the room. Don't be alone with the wine.
I know at Thanksgiving I always made sure not to be alone with uncle Dick. Yes, that was his name. He was the one who always made me uncomfortable by something he would say or the way he would touch me.
Think of the wine like that uncle that it isn't safe to be alone with.
Leave the room. Sit. Do what it takes, watch TV, take a walk, read threads here. You've got this.

Hey Briar-
Personally, I feel it's all about the mindset. You have to come to terms with the fact that you are unable to have a drink -period.
Not unlike the person who's allergic to nuts. They know they can not have any nuts, regardless who would or would not notice. They know if they do, there will be problems for them. I think once you come to both understand, as well as appreciate this, then things might be a bit easier.
Please know that it will get better, however it does take a strong commitment.
