five months and counting

Hi, I'm new to this site. Going on five months sober. The physical cravings are gone but am experiencing feelings of fatigue, lack of enthusiasm, sadness, etc. I feel emotionally drained. Alcohol has been part of my life for 43 years. My life is much calmer and quieter which is a welcome change. My name is Doreen and I'm a recovering alcoholic. Thanks for letting me share.

Welcome, Doreen. I'm also right around the 5 month mark and am having some of the same feelings. Reading and posting here helps.

Congratulations on your successes thus far!

Welcome! What you are experiencing could be PAWS (post acute withdrawal syndrome). Your symptoms are common in early sobriety. Google post acute withdrawal syndrome and see if they aren't describing your moods.

It gets better with more sober time. Take good care of yourself too; enough rest, good food, and exercise. It will get better.

Congrats on five months sober!

Welcome Doreent. I have ten months sober and I am miserable. So much damage to my life was brought by alcoholism but just facing it now. Hard without the crutch alcohol served as for so many years.

Thank you all for your encouraging words. I know how important a support group is. Been familiarizing myself with SR site for now and like what I'm reading.

Doreen - it's great to have you here with us.

I felt exactly the same way when I quit. I'd been drinking almost 30 yrs. and barely knew how to make a move without my 'buffer'. I was completely dependent on it & the first few months were beyond strange. I felt like I was in slow motion, lethargic, achey, jittery, anxious. Everything got better - it all changed. I came back to life and got my joy and hope back. I believe you will too. Stay with us!

Hi doreen, welcome. I started feeling more energy around 6-7 months. Just keep up the good work and it will get better. I'm at 9 months now and I feel good. All of a sudden you will wake up one morning and feel great.

Thanks everyone for your input. I know it will get better as time goes by. I can't fix 40 plus years of drinking in five months. Time is a key factor for me. These new feelings snuck up on me. It's good to hear that it's part of the healing process.
