Hi.
I found it helpful not thinking about drinking, think about anything else. Sugar sweetened drinks for many reduce the desire also.
I did the above and attended many meetings for support by the sober professional ex drinkers.

It's only going to stop when you stop it.
What support are you using? or are you depending on sheer willpower?
For me alone with my own thoughts would end only one way, my own mind would grind me down and I would drink again in isolation.
Instead I needed something outside of my own mind to give me a different perspective, take away all those myths and fairytales my own mind was selling me.
SR is a great place for support, but only if you use it BEFORE picking up that first drink!!
You can do this!!

Willpower, guilt, hangover pain are only motivators for the first few days, after that, the crew is right. You need a plan. AA, SR, Friends, Family, some sort of support group. lifestyle changes, and commitment has to play a part if you are going to keep at this long term. The desire to change is obviously there, as you are here, congratulations on that first step!
Hey ms980619, today is a new day and a new start. It's touch, I know, but it's so very worth the battle. You're back here, which is a step in the right direction.
I posted some useful links here a couple of days ago. Perhaps there's something that you might find useful.

Thank you all for the support. I seem to do well for a while then the stupid AV takes over and I act on impulse without thinking about the end actions. I need to figure out a way to get rid of this AV in my head and not act on impulse.
Hi ms,
Impulses take a long time to build, and I'm finding it very helpful to really work on (and write down) every single thought and urge and AV yammering that causes me to drink. For a very structured way to do this, check out the SMARTrecovery tools:
SMART Recovery® - Tool Chest and Homework
I have quite a few of those pasted onto a Word document, where I can fill them out and add to them as needed. It's really helped me recognise and resist that stupid AV early, before I get to the "can't fight it any more" stage.
