I was out today with a couple of people who have only known me while sober (I met them through work). One of them said "It's really cool you don't drink or do drugs or anything, man I wish I was just disciplined like that, it must be easy being like you".

I burst out laughing.

In my head I'm still laughing.

First thing this made me think of was a swan gracefully gliding though a lake while under the water his feet are kicking and working like mad.

True, opting for sobriety has taken a lot of troubles from my life. I would nto say our way of life is easy. It is, however, rather simple. We just have to follow the basic rules.

Reminds me of when I was 13/14? and I said to my dad after lying in bed instead of getting to school on time "well it's easy for you, you get up every day without a problem" and he responded "you think it's easy getting up at 5am? It's always hard, I do it so you can eat".

I got up for school the next day.

So many people struggle with a month off alcohol for charity every year, so it's hardly easy!!

Nothing worthwhile in my life has ever been easy. However, sobriety and all of the other tough things have been deeply gratifying.

I will admit it is easier than being a full blown alcoholic but easy? "I DON'T THINK SO!"

I think the easiest part is not physically drinking, it's the day to day battles we have to control that can make it more difficult.

Yep. And even that is quite difficult at first! But you are right, it's mind-game that our addiction is playing that becomes the hardest. It's not always a daily battle, but it's always there waiting for weak moments.

I think I probably said something similarly absurd before I quit drinking. Never thinking that I would, or could, be a member of that club someday LOL!
