not being able to sleep

I have been four weeks alcohol free after 50 years of almost everyday drinking. I probably wasn't a heavy drinker, but a few drinks before dinner. More on weekends. I have quit before for up to three months, but always convince myself that I can drink in moderation. Wrong, always end up back where I was. My biggest problem is not being able to sleep. How long does that go on?

For me it took a solid week before I could sleep straight trough the night.

Everyone is different of course. I find relaxing herbal tea right after dinner and maintaining a solid routine helps me. I go to bed at the same time, and listen to meditation music until I fall asleep. I don't stress about falling asleep.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to the Forum!!

For me it took a while to adjust my sleeping, after 50 years your body just needs time, but it'll get better with each week!!

Hi JimRay

It took about a week for me too but some people go longer, some shorter.

Thanks for the information. Amazing how the brain tries to trip you up.

It 's been 87 days for me and still about every week my sleeping pattern changes. Sometimes for the better--sometimes for the worse At least when I wake up now, I don't have a hang-over! lol

I would estimate i started sleeping most of the night again within a couple of weeks, but it took several weeks to really get back into a normal pattern. Having said that, even the fitful sleep and insomnia I had the first couple weeks beat passing out on the couch and waking up at 4am because my body was already starting to react to lack of alcohol in my system

the Brain?

give yourself a week or two before you call out for more help on the sleep issue.

Welcome to the forum

welcome!

Inability to sleep lasts anywhere from 2-8 weeks it seems - depending on the person, the good news is it DOES calm down as time goes on.

Personally i struggled to sleep WELL into week 6. I am nearly 4 months sober and i still have the odd day or two where i dont sleep very well.

Unfortunately, inability to sleep and/or lousy sleep quality is a common side-effect of suddenly quitting alcohol. Hang in there
