grocery shopping issue
Ok I have been posting a lot today but this is on my mind right now. I used to do the grocery shopping. However, I would almost always buy booze along with the food and start in on drinking right away as soon as I got home. Then later I was drinking so much and so early that I could not even get to the store to shop for food. So my husband started doing it instead.
I felt guilty about this since he already does most of the stuff around here. He is a hard worker but still. anyways, now I think I could pick up some of the slack and go grocery shopping again. Only problem is avoiding the aisles that sell alcohol. One store near me used to not sell booze but now they do. So I am not sure if I am strong enough yet to go grocery shopping.
I am really early on in recovery. Perhaps once I have more time sober, I will feel differently.

My husband and I shop early early in the morning
like around 6ish well before many get up except
us oldtimers. We do our own check out and i'll
hand him and item with then bar code for him to
see and scan. After all is bagged and he pays, i'll
put them in the cart and he pushes while we walk
together protecting each other on our grocery
journey.
We both know that alcohol is poison and if
the topic is brought up, we talk it out and
get back on track with our Faith and recovery
program tightly embedded in our hearts, minds
and souls.
Supporting, caring, protecting each other.

Just consider the booze aisle a no go zone. Alcohol is so readily available everywhere nowadays that to avoid it completely would be near impossible. I agree with the above posts. Perhaps you and your husband could go together the first couple of times until you feel a bit more comfortable. Sharing your thoughts with him could help, too. He sounds supportive, and you should grab all the support you can get

yes, I think I can make a conscious decision to just not walk down that aisle. One store that is convenient doesn't have a large alcohol section anyways and its not that easy to see unless you go deep into that aisle. its not an aisle I need stuff from although other stuff besides alcohol is there. I would like to grocery shop so I can feel more productive and like I am contributing once again to the household. for so long, me being drunk just made me not do much of anything.

I am not sure. There is a time limit but not sure what it is. I do know that one store I have in mind doesn't sell it after 10pm but I go to bed around 9. In the past I have purchased alcohol early, like 7am. I know overall they don't sell it after 2am but I do not know when that ends in the morning. wish it was 10am but I think its much earlier.
I used to buy groceries and quickly run to the restroom for a drink before heading home...oh I'm glad those days are over!
Anyway, why don't you try and buy only a few things. Don't spend too much time at the store. Grab an item or two and go home. The next day stay a little longer.

I sing songs to myself as I walk through the alcohol aisle. Example.. The greatest love of all....
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
Extremely corny but it works for me.
I also play "spot the drinker" at the checkout. One white loaf and 24 cans of Stella.
I used to tell the checkout person I was having a party. In fact all the alcohol was for me.

oh yeah I've said that before, that its for a party. it was when some random guy asked for one of my beers while I was buying them. couldn't part with any so said they were for a get together. well then the guy wanted to come over so that was awkward.
I will have to deal with the grocery store eventually.

My husband would make things worse. He'd be examining the red wines like he was in a museum of fine art choosing a winner for this year's turner prize. You're spending about a fiver for heaven's sake! It'll all kill you no matter how fancy the label.
I've been using a grocery home delivery service. It's great. You select all the things you want on their web site, one of their people pick it up and deliver it to you. You do pay some more than going yourself but it keeps me away from the booze aisle.
Staying away from the liquor store on the way home from has been my challenge.

I definitely have had trouble avoiding the liquor store just anytime I'm out driving somewhere. yesterday it was bad so I just stayed home all day for my own safety.
There might be delivery services near me. not sure.

I do recall that one of the grocery stores near me does it. I think I was looking stuff up about it before. It is more expensive but perhaps in the meantime it would be good. Although I think my husband is willing to help out still with it. I should really just pick up the slack with some other household chores in the meantime.
