I learned a couple of things
Sometimes I feel like a very slow learner but I guess that's ok as long as I eventually absorb the material. Yesterday I realized that each day I don't drink is actually a success and it should be treated as such (at least for me). It is almost like when I ran a lot. I am not a natural runner and I probably walked faster than I ran. But every time I ran I felt like I succeeded in doing something that was difficult for me to do. I don't run anymore because of my physical problems but I get a similar feeling of success when I make it through a day without alcohol. Despite anything else that may happen during the day if I do not drink it was a successful day.
Today I went to a step meeting (AA) before work. In the meeting I realized that being sober is a decision I have to make for myself. It isn't just going to happen by osmosis, as much as I would like it to.
As I said, I am a slow learner and have slipped many times. Finally, though, I feel like I am on to something good.

Great! Steady forward is excellent progress. It's amazing how many pearls we get and retain when we concentrate on the now instead of racing into the future. I like to think this period is the building of a solid foundation who so many miss the value of.

Some guy said (in a meeting)....years ago
" whatever I get accomplished today, my greatest success will be not taking a drink"
I thought he was getting a little theatrical at the time,
now, ...............I think he's right

I like your analogy to running. For me sobriety has had a lot of parallels to fitness training. In both I pay a lot of attention to what I put in my mouth, they're both lifetime projects made up of long-term goals, and to succeed in each you have to be diligent and consistent about working on it, every day.
